Personal Computer(pc) Drops Netbook Gained
No Comments on Personal Computer(pc) Drops Netbook Gained
Today the worldwide personal computer (PC) market is pulling out of its fall quickly and could resist predictions by growing this year. Market research firms IDC and Gartner have both predicted a year-over-year decline in PC shipments in 2009, which would be the first such drop since 2001.
Intel Corp. CEO Otellini at a conference show off chips built on so-called 22-nanometer technology, which refers to the ever-shrinking size of circuitry on the most advanced chips. Those chips are still being developed in Intel\'s factories and won\'t go into production until 2011.
Sales of cheap little \"netbook\" computers, used primarily for surfing the Internet, have been a bright spot, but those machines ring up low profits for PC and chip makers.
Researchers at Gartner Inc. predict a 2 percent decline in PC shipments for 2009, though that\'s better than a few months ago, when the group was forecasting a drop of 6 percent. Now things are looking much better in the second half.
Read More Windows 7 upgrades can take up to Longer time depending upon the data
Microsoft has said that some in-place upgrades from Windows Vista to the new Windows 7 may take some users over 20 hours to complete.
Chris Hernandez, who works in the Windows deployment team Said that the best that users can hope for is a 1 hour and 24 minute process. So-called clean installs, where the user overwrites an existing edition of Windows to end up with the OS, but no former data or applications, take less time: from 27 to 46 minutes.
One of the main goals with Windows 7 in general has been to be better than Vista. As part of the Windows Upgrade team we have tracked Windows 7 upgrade performance using Vista as our baseline comparison. The in-place upgrade from Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to Windows 7 at least 5% faster than an in-place upgrade from Vista SP1 to a new copy of Vista SP1.
Windows 7 upgrade time is faster or equal within a 5% threshold to the Vista SP1 upgrade time.
Hernandez said the in-place upgrade times were obtained from lab machines in three different configurations: labeled low, mid-range and high-end -- with three simulated users: a medium user, a heavy user and a super user. The profiles differed in the amount of data and the number of applications that were on the PC before the upgrade to Windows 7. The medium user profile, for example, assumed 70GB of data and 20 applications; the super user profile, on the other hand, contained 650GB of data and 40 applications. Microsoft\'s data showed that so-called edium\" users, those with 70GB of data and 20 applications would spend between 1 hour and 40 minutes and 2 hours 50 minutes doing a 32-bit upgrade. The more powerful the PC, the faster the upgrade, according to Microsoft. Heavy users: which Microsoft posed as people with 125GB of data and 40 applications, would need between 2 hours and 40 minutes and 5 hours and 43 minutes to do the same upgrade.

Nokia unveiled three new phone models and said its new Booklet 3G will go on sale for about 575 euros ($820).
Nokia smartphone on line-up to better compete with Apple and put a price on the new laptop leading its foray into the fiercely-competitive netbook market. Nokia has major challenges on developing user experience, and might have to wait for a significant improvement until the second half of next year. Nokia has seen its profit margins drop over the last few quarters as handset demand has slumped, and analysts have worried that entering the PC industry, where margins are traditionally razor-thin, could further depress earnings. Nokia had to do it. You see more and more PC guys getting into the mobile operators
With the move into laptops, Nokia is crossing the border between two converging industries from the opposite direction to Mac-maker Apple, which entered the phone industry in 2007 with the iPhone.
The handset announcements, the latest moves by the Finnish firm to match Apple\'s innovation in a sector switching focus to services and software, left some analysts unimpressed.
Read More Intel Aims to revitalize Netbook Evolution
The Netbooks are intended for basic computing tasks, like e-mail and Web surfing. But they have grown larger and more powerful over time, and some users find them sufficiently capable to serve as their primary computers. By keeping netbook screen sizes in check, Intel wants to limit the cannibalization of laptop sales and manage user expectations.
When hardware makers build a small laptop, or netbook, based on the Atom netbook platform, they are generally bound by constraints that limit certain specifications, such as a screen size that doesn\'t exceed 10.2 inches. These guidelines are meant to segment the laptop market and define a product category that is different from mainstream laptops.
Other companies hasn\'t stopped from trying to give Atom-based netbooks bigger screens and more computing muscle. For example, Dell sells an Atom-based laptop with a 12-inch screen, called the Mini 12, that it bills as a \"laptop/netbook\" and graphics chip maker Nvidia\'s GeForce Ion brings high-end multimedia and graphics capabilities to Atom.
Intel wasn\'t particularly impressed. Eden believes Intel struck the right balance between computer performance and battery life with the Atom platform. In Intel\'s view, bigger screens and more powerful graphics chips upset that carefully constructed balance, even if some users crave these features.
This is where rivals Advanced Micro Devices and Via Technologies sense an opportunity to push their own offerings. Both companies have released chips designed for thin and light laptops with bigger screens, such as Samsung Electronics\'s Via Nano-based NC20 laptop and Hewlett-Packard\'s Pavilion dv2, which uses AMD\'s Athlon Neo processor.
Companies that try to tweak the platform by increasing screen size or adding better graphics also end up reducing the battery life of these machines.
Instead of upgraded specifications, Intel is pushing netbooks towards thinner and lighter demands with Pine Trail, the next version of the platform built around the upcoming Pineview version of Atom. Unlike the current versions of Atom used in netbooks, Pineview integrates a memory controller and graphics core with the processor, features that are designed to boost performance and save power.
Eden said that now they are trying to take this category to the next level and I will not be surprised if you see even the netbook space will be shaped differently because of the better battery life and better performance that they can produce.
Read More Windows 7 Release Date Announced
The guessing game is over! Windows 7, the next major release of the world\'s most popular operating system, will be officially available to the public on 22 October.
Now Microsoft is hoping it can avoid the negative press that surrounded the launch of Vista, the last major Windows release, almost three years ago. Windows 7 has been designed to be compatible with Vista so users do not have to invest in new hardware. Customers who buy a new PC with Vista will be offered upgrades to Windows 7.
In order to finish the OS on time, Microsoft plans to wrap up development of the operating system by the middle or end of next month.
Windows 7 promises a major usability improvement on Vista, and a simplification of security measures. Beta testers of Windows 7 have reported that it is faster than Vista.
Microsoft also said without giving specific details that those who purchase PCs running Vista between now and the Release Date will receive either a free or discounted copy of Windows 7.

Microsoft has confirmed that the 5th May RC of the new OS will not expire until 1 June 2010, which means more than a year of free play for anyone installing it next week.
The Windows 7 is almost certain to be with us in all its finished, Microsoft-saving glory in the summer, but had you cottoned on to the fact that you can get the release candidate next week and run it for free for a year anyway.
Previously, Windows Vista\'s candidate releases remained fully functional only for around eight months, nominally for testing purposes, but there was no shortage of cracks available online to keep them going indefinitely.
Read More Microsoft to Launch Next Generation Search Engine- Kumo
Although Microsoft is testing the search engine under the Kumo name, executives have said that is just one of several names the company is considering.
Microsoft has reportedly put up a clock in one of its buildings with a 40-day countdown to the launch of its next generation search engine, code named Kumo.
The search engine focuses on a couple of areas, including an attempt to break down a search query into a couple more detailed options. When searching, say, for the term \"Audi,\" Kumo breaks things down into an initial result with facts such as price and fuel economy pulled out in bold, followed by general Web results, then results by category, such as Audi parts, used Audis, and Audi accessories.
The software maker has been testing its search engine internally since last month, but has not said exactly when the service would launch. The countdown appears to roughly coincide with a speech from newly minted online boss Qi Lu, who is slated to speak at the SMX Advanced event on June 3. The timing also seems to coincide with reports that Microsoft plans a big ad campaign for its search engine starting this summer.
